After setting the approximate cutter projection, the fine-pitch internal thread lets you fine-tune the position within a 1/4" range by rotating the adjustment. Two locking knobs then secure the setting so it holds through use.

The hardened steel wheel scribes at any point on its circumference, cutting fibers cleanly rather than tearing them. Unlike a pin, the wheel doesn't need to be tilted to cut and won't follow the wood grain, so the line stays on track even across the grain.
