Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisels

PM-V11 is a powder-metallurgy alloy developed by Veritas with a finer grain structure than A2. In practice the edge typically lasts at least twice as long before needing sharpening. It is also easier to resharpen than A2 on standard water stones or ceramic stones, despite being harder (Rc61–63 vs Rc60–62 for A2).

Chisels 3/8" and smaller have 30° primary bevels. Larger chisels have 25° primary bevels.

The chisels are supplied at 25° (blades over 3/8") or 30° (3/8" and smaller). The bevel angle can (and should) be changed to suit the type of work being done and the wood being worked. Work that is predominantly mallet driven may require a higher bevel angle, while careful paring work may benefit from lower bevel angles. In most cases, opting for the lowest possible primary bevel and adjusting the cutting characteristics by changing the micro-bevel give the best results for the least amount of effort.

All blades are supplied at a usable sharpness, but we recommend a final honing before first use. The lapped flat back means you only need to address the bevel.

Torrefaction is a controlled heating process that alters the wood's cellular structure, reducing its tendency to absorb moisture. The result is a handle that is more dimensionally stable across seasonal humidity changes and less likely to loosen or shift over time.

The chisels are available both individually (1/8" through 1") and as a set of five or a set of seven.
